Prof. Olatunde Stephen Olatunji
Professor, School of Chemistry & Physics, University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), South Africa
Prof. Olatunde Stephen Olatunji is an internationally recognized professor and researcher in analytical and environmental chemistry at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His expertise lies in the detection and assessment of emerging chemical contaminants—including endocrine disruptors, pharmaceuticals, persistent organic pollutants (such as PFAS, PFOS, PCBs, and pesticides), and heavy metals—in aquatic and atmospheric systems. Prof. Olatunji employs advanced analytical technology, including LC-ESI-MS, to drive innovative research into environmental quality and remediation.
As a core member of UKZN’s Nanotechnology Platform and the Sustainable Water Energy & Biomass (SUSWEB) initiatives, he leads multidisciplinary research teams tackling critical environmental issues in Africa and beyond. His impactful investigations range from heavy metal contamination in Nigerian freshwater systems to pollutant sorption dynamics in South Africa’s river sediments.
Prof. Olatunji holds a PhD, MSc, and BSc (Hons) in Chemistry, building his academic foundation with early research at the University of Ibadan. Renowned for fostering international collaborations and translating research into real-world solutions, he is dedicated to advancing chemical risk assessment, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development through science and education.
