Dr. Beatrice Akala

Dr. Beatrice Akala is a Lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand’s School of Education, where she has been teaching since 2023. She holds a PhD in Gender and Education from Wits (2016), along with MEd and BEd Hons degrees from the same institution, and a BEd from the University of Nairobi.

A multidisciplinary scholar with over 15 years of academic experience, Dr. Akala specializes in gender studies, social justice, education research, and curriculum implementation policies. She currently serves as Research Associate with the SARChI Chair in Teaching and Learning at Wits, while also maintaining a part-time lecturer position at the University of Johannesburg.

Her recent work includes co-authoring research on digital transformation in South African higher education and contributing to the British Council’s Gender Analysis Research Project examining barriers to employability and entrepreneurship for students across Sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Akala is actively involved in projects studying doctoral journeys of Black female students and has published extensively on gender equity in higher education.
